Vacancy at CI Indonesia - Sustainable Agriculture Landscapes Manager - Medan

Conservation International, an international non-governmental organization, is seeking applicants for senior level technical and management positions to be based in Medan for the following position.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE LANDSCAPE MANAGER 


The Sustainable Agriculture Landscapes Manager will be responsible for managing this new agricultural initiative in Sumatra and will serve as the primary point of contact in Indonesia with a leading corporate partner in the agricultural sector. The Manager will report to the CI Indonesia Terrestrial Program Director and will work closely with other CI divisions, in particular CI’s Center for Environmental Leadership in Business, in implementing this initiative.  The position will also work closely with external partners at local and national levels, and will further be responsible for establishing constructive relationships with local government to support project alignment with government development objectives.

The Manager will be based in Medan, North Sumatra with frequent travel to project sites in North Sumatra and periodic travel to CI offices in Jakarta.  S/he will manage a small team of field staff to support project implementation and will coordinate closely with other CI staff in Medan, Jakarta, Singapore, CI Headquarters near Washington DC, and other relevant CI Offices.

Responsibilities:
  • Project Management and Reporting - Lead development and implementation of high quality project work plans that will lead to fulfillment of project objectives.  The manager will ensure timely delivery of project outputs, within budget, and will also be responsible for reporting to donor and partner organizations. S/he will manage project staff, sub-contractors, and relationships with partner organizations.
  • Field Implementation - Ensure delivery of high quality technical interventions in the field.This will include overseeing a series of environmental, social, and agronomic assessments that will guide project implementation, working with agricultural partners to identify and deliver appropriate farmer training programs, and identifying critical natural capital within agricultural landscapes and developing appropriate programs to ensure conservation and sustainable management of these areas.
  • Government Engagement - Establish and maintain working relationships with relevant local and other government agencies ensure they are informed of project activities and objectives, and seek alignment of project activities with government development programs and objectives where appropriate. Provide technical support to government agencies where relevant and appropriate.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation - Oversee design and implementation of an M&E system that will generate data necessary to track project progress, assess impacts, evaluate project hypotheses, and inform reporting.
  • Outreach and Communications - Support development of external communications materials, serve as spokesperson to describe project activities, objectives, and results to external audiences as necessary, and give presentations at appropriate conferences and events.
Qualifications:
  • A master degree or equivalent experience in agriculture or related fields, with 5 -10 years of relevant experience in agriculture, farmer training or extension.
  • Experience with annual crops, preferably corn, with small and/or large scale farming systems.
  • Experience in effectively working with government, NGO, and private sectors.
  • Demonstrated strong project management skills, including project development and M&E.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
  • Commitment to conserving biodiversity and implementing sustainable agriculture initiatives
Preferred:
  • Direct experience in North Sumatra province.
  • Understanding of anticipated impacts of climate change upon agriculture and climate change adaptation measures.
  • Strong interest in environmental issues and eagerness to expand knowledge.
  • Computer skills and experience in relevant software.
  • Networking ability and facilitation skills.
  • The preferred candidate will be self-motivated, able to travel in the region, and be able to meet project deadlines often under difficult circumstances.
  • Knowledge on restoration of degraded areas, forestry, agroforestry and silvopastoral systems.
  • Knowledge on payment for ecosystem service programs, in particular forest-based carbon project design and development.
