WWF-Indonesia, an independent national conservation organization, is part of a global network of WWF. WWF-ID is currently seeking for the best candidate for the position of Consultant Legal Advisor. This position will be based in Jakarta and report to Sustainable Palm Oil Policy & Landscape Intervention Specialist.

Project objective:
WWF’s vision is a future where all palm oil is produced without causing deforestation, peatland and environmental degradation or harming wildlife, where workers are treated fairly, and communities' rights are respected, and producers including smallholder farmers have access to tools for responsible production and access to benefit from the market for responsible palm oil.

Project Halt is a WWF initiative to pilot an innovative traceability app which aims to empower companies to exclude illegal palm oil from its supply chain. The project aims to achieve the following:

  • Efficient in identifying suppliers with potential legal or environmental risks for more intensive checks.
  • Able to map the supply chain in real-time as the FFB moves from plantation to mill for prompt interventions against FFB coming from sources that are illegal and/or in violation of zero-deforestation policies.
  • Capable of sharing data across competitive supply chains without compromising business integrity.
  • Able to provide a standardized industry approach to supply chain traceability to plantations.
  • Able to help users (mills, DOH, agents, and plantation owners) to improve their business efficiency.
  • Able to help the industry connect directly with smallholders, assess their plantations, and identify their needs for technical support to inform future agricultural improvement schemes.
Deliverables:

  • The Consultant Legal Advisor is expected to provide legal advice for the project to ensure the project is carried out within Indonesian laws.
  • Legal advice for the collection and storage of personal data of upstream palm oil supply chain actors, including for:
    • Smallholder farmers: personal information, profile of oil palm plantation, employees, and link to other supply chain actors
    • Small businesses: personal information, the profile of business (as a middleman or as a collector in the supply chain), employees, and link to other supply chain actors
    • Mills: profile of the business, profile of owned oil palm plantations, employees and link to other supply chain actors
  • Legal advice for the analysis and sharing of anonymized supply chain data across business competitors. For example:
    • Competitive supply chain data collected will be analyzed to provide users with future trends, supply chain risk analysis, and the Identify any other areas of the project to be strengthened legally.
Project Timeline
WWF expects the consultant’s tender to outline a suggested timeline. It is suggested that a kick-off meeting takes place no later than July 2020 and the final report should be delivered to WWF by the end of December 2020.

Requirements for this position are:

  • Bachelor Degree (S-1) or above in Law, or other relevant major
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in Indonesian Law and regulation.
