This post is located in the Asia-Pacific Division of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and is based in Jakarta, Indonesia. This position will focus on advancing the Comprehensive Partnership between the UN and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) through strengthened institutional dialogue and coordination between the two organizations and with ASEAN member states, including through engaging with the ASEAN Committee of the Permanent Representatives. The Political Affairs Officer reports to the Team Leader for South and Southeast Asia.

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Reviews and monitors activities in the ASEAN region; assess trends that might affect the overall political situation and the political impact of intra-regional issues on the ASEAN-UN Comprehensive Partnership; recommends solutions/possible action or engagement by United Nations.
  • Analyses political and related events within the ASEAN region with a view to providing early warning advice to senior UN officials.
  • Drafts notes, background papers, talking points, speeches, and other correspondence for senior UN officials.
  • Acts as a focal point for collection and analyses of information on political issues of assignment, in coordination with DPPA-DPO headquarters and regional presences.
  • Conceptualises, coordinates, arranges and participates in ASEAN-UN collaborative activities and events. Carries out other assignments in the region as assigned.
  • Meets regularly with operational teams including UN staff, national and ASEAN member state officials as well as ASEAN Secretariat staff to coordinate work on joint reports and progress on the ASEAN-UN Plan of Action.
  • Provides up-to-date information to senior officials regarding substantive political matters and country or regional issues and makes recommendations on actions to take.
  • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments, ASEAN Dialogue Partners, think tanks and civil society on coordination and policy matters; briefs representatives and provides, as appropriate suggestions and recommendations.
  • Participates in conferences, seminars, and academic fora related to his/her assigned area of expertise.
  • Carries out, in consultation with the Team Leader, administrative functions relating to the staff planning and budget, including preparing project proposals, monitoring, and reporting on Extra-budgetary (XB) funded project activities under the Multi-Year Appeal.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
