WRI Indonesia is associated with the World Resources Institute (WRI), a global environmental research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. In the short-to-medium term, WRI Indonesia aims to expand its presence and portfolio to include climate, energy, as well as cities and transportation programs.
Overview
According to the Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia emitted approximately 800 million-1,1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2eq) emissions due to huge forests and land fires in 2015. These fires are largely caused by extensive peat soil drainage and excessive peat conversion to other land uses, mainly to palm oil plantations.
As a preventive measure of fires and haze, President Joko Widodo mentioned in his official speech at the Conference of Parties (COP) 21 Paris the establishment of the Peat Restoration Agency (Badan Restorasi Gambut/BRG), an agency that is mandated to restore 2 million hectares of peat by 2020. This work entails, for example, mapping fire-prone provinces, raising peatland water tables, revegetating degraded peatland, creating alternative livelihoods for local communities, and investigating alternative crops for peatland.
WRI Indonesia supports the Peat Restoration Agency (BRG) to achieve its restoration targets to significantly reduce carbon emissions by developing a transparent and effective monitoring and reporting system for peatland restoration activities and peat emission. The support includes working with BRG for to support mapping and planning.
Responsibilities
The GIS Assistant will support day to day spatial analysis in Peat Restoration Agency and will mainly be based in Peat Restoration Agency office in Jakarta. He/she will be supervised by and report to The Head of BRG Working Group for Planning and coordinate with WRI’s PRIMS Platform Lead as well as Global Forest Watch Coordinatorwho will also carry out a performance evaluation at the end of the assignment.
Below is the breakdown of the responsibilities of the GIS Assistant:
- Provide GIS data and the spatial analysis for Peatland Characteristic Inventory Preparation Plan with MoEF,updating the Indicative Restoration Map and also provide guideline for Rencana Tindak Tahunan (RTT) or Action Plan development;
- Assist the quality control and assurance of geospatial product related to planning document development;
- Updating data with respect to the different types of geospatial information and sources (from other ministriesor related partner);
- Support the team of Deputy I for development of Spatial and Non-Spatial Data Document of Compliance Spot of Peat Ecosystem Restoration in each Province and District in 7 priority provinces of BRG Working Area;
- Providing spatial and non-spatial data for KHG Inventory in 2018;
- Assist sub-director of monitoring and evaluation to make peatland restoration monitoring guidelines;
- Assist sub-director of monitoring and evaluation in coordination to Peatland Restoration Information Management System.
- Data for Peatland Characteristics Inventory Preparation Plan and Indicative Restoration Map updated are managed, updated, and ready to be used by BRG and other stakeholders
- Data and spatial analysis for KHG Inventory as well as Compliance Spot of Peat Ecosystem Restoration prepared and ready to be used by BRG and other stakeholders
- Report on quality assurance of geospatial data for BRG’s planning document development
Applicants must have:
- Hold bachelor’s degree in engineering. cartography, geodesy, geomatics, informatics, geography or any other related field.
- Minimum having 1-3 years of technical aspects of spatial analysis, spatial server, and/or geographical data management and utilization.
- Knowledge in spatial analysis for environment and peatland restoration would be a strong point.
- Legally able to work in Indonesia.
- Strong team player with ability to work across institutional departments/programs.
- Experience in working with government, development sector and multi-stakeholders will be an advantage.
- Candidate must be self-motivated, detail-oriented and organized thinker with an ability to juggle multiple priorities, handle assignments independently, and work under tight deadlines.
- Intermediate level in English and fluency in Bahasa Indonesia is required.
