OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME:
The Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) is a health intervention program designed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the high infant morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases. WHO recommends immunization strategies to all countries through the EPI program.

Indonesia started with measles reduction since 2009 by conducting school immunization for measles and started with second doses measles in 2015. Those immunizations expectedly will reduce measles disease infection in the country and accelerate the measles elimination in the country. Measles school immunization coverage was reported successful with coverage of more than 90%, but second dose measles had still low coverage after two years program implemented.

In the 66th meeting of SEAR Regional Committee in September 2013 in New Delhi resolved to adopt the goal of measles elimination and rubella/CRS control in the South East Asia Region by 2020. In order to achieve the regional goals, some objectives have been set up:
  • Achieve and maintain at least 95% population immunity with two doses against measles and rubella within each district of each country in the region through routine/or supplementary immunization.
  • Develop and sustain and timely case-based measles and rubella and CRS surveillance system in each country in the region that fulfills recommended surveillance performance indicators.
  • Develop and maintains a WHO proficient measles and rubella laboratory network that support every country in the region.
  • Strengthen support and linkages to achieve the above three strategic objectives.
