Chemonics International seeks applications for a Communications Manager with experience performing environment-focused communications activities for the newly awarded USAID BIJAK project.

Project Overview
USAID’s BIJAK (Bangun Indonesia untuk Jaga Alam demi Keberlanjutan) is a Jakarta-based, five-year project implemented by Chemonics International in collaboration with Kemitraan and Wildlife Conservation Society. The overarching objective of USAID’s BIJAK project is to address the constellation of market forces, financial incentives, policy levers, social norms and values driving deforestation and biodiversity loss in order to promote enduring changes in individual and organizational behavior which reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve valuable marine and terrestrial biodiversity. To realize this objective, BIJAK will work through national instruments and systems to impact the following:
  • Number of national level laws, policies, regulations, decrees, procedures, or fiscal and budgetary practices developed, revised, adopted and/or applied in order to reduce GHG emissions, reduce wildlife trafficking, and conserve valuable terrestrial and marine biodiversity with support from BIJAK.
  • Improved capacity and willingness of Indonesian institutions and organizations to address biodiversity conservation, especially wildlife trafficking, and climate change.
  • Number of businesses engaged in extensive land-use practices, especially palm oil, developing green business practices and sharing them widely with others in their industry.
  • Amount of investment leveraged in USD from private and public sources for biodiversity conservation and/or climate change.
  • Public opinion and behaviors changed as a result of advocacy campaigns developed and implemented to support targeted terrestrial and marine biodiversity conservation and low carbon development issues.
  • Model(s) for successful low emissions development and forest conservation developed and shared at all levels of government and with other key stakeholders.
Position Responsibilities
  • Develop BIJAK’s communications plan, including a comprehensive social media strategy.
  • Apply USAID’s branding and marking regulations and other communication guidelines to BIJAK and its materials.
  • Provide support as needed to the team in charge of the development of behavior change communications campaigns, and supporting BIJAK partners (primarily CSOs and think tanks) in developing and improving their communications strategies, including public outreach and advocacy activities.
  • Lead the development of communications and outreach products, including but not limited to the following: regular newsletter, written and video success stories, project website and social media tools, project brochures, press releases, etc.
  • Support internal communications and record-keeping, develop tools for knowledge management to share best practices and lessons learned with other donors, the government, and other key stakeholders and to assist in the promotion, adaptation and nationwide application of successful approaches and practices arising through the BIJAK project.
  • Assist in the development of project progress reports (quarterly, annual, final).
  • Maintain database of stakeholder contacts, and develop and maintain relations with media professionals.
Minimum Qualifications
The Communications Manager is responsible for providing technical assistance for activities related to communications and outreach regarding project activities. The Manager should be highly creative and innovative and have a minimum 5 (five) years of professional experience with public communications and work with all forms of media. A university degree in journalism, English, public relations, or comparable education or experience is preferred. Prior experience with technical assistance projects and work with donor-funded projects is preferred, particularly in the field of environment. Written and verbal fluency in English and Bahasa Indonesia is a prerequisite.  Strong inter-personal and communication skills are required.  Demonstrated skills with software packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as photo and video editing software are required (knowledge of subtitling software a plus); familiarity with web management tools.

Selection will be based upon education, work experience and writing skills in addition to personal qualities such as:  interpersonal skills, leadership and management capability, consensus-building skills, creativity and willingness to utilize innovative approaches to meet the objectives of the BIJAK Project. Candidates will be asked to take writing tests in English at the interview. Final candidates will be selected after the interview, where the above selection criteria will be evaluated.
