ZSL Indonesia Job Vacancy: Private Sector Manager - Palembang

The Zoological Society of London is an international wildlife conservation organization with a focus on science-based and pragmatic solutions. ZSL has been active in Indonesia for about 10 years, with a particular focus on the overlap between industrial development and biodiversity conservation. ZSL Indonesia is based in Bogor, West Java, with existing field projects in Jambi and South Sumatera.

Private Sector Manager

Terms and Condition
Start Date : May, 2016
Duration of Contract : One year fix- term Contract, with potential to extend
Work Area : The Finance Officer will be based in Palembang.
Hours of Work : Monday to Friday from 09.00 am up to 05.00 pm
Reporting to : Pilot LandscapeTeam Leader
 

Key Purpose of the Job
To oversee ZSL Indonesia’s strategy for working with industry, to include strategic direction, planning and implementation of activities to support biodiversity conservation in areas managed by high environmental impact industries. The Private Sector Manager will specifically deliver a work programme in South Sumatra under an existing sustainable landscape project*.

The post holder will design and implement activities with industry actors (the palm oil, forestry and pulp, and mining sectors, and others as relevant) identified within the landscape to meet ZSL’s biodiversity conservation objectives. This includes identifying, engaging, and managing (new and existing) relationships with priority companies, including APP, ConocoPhillips, Musim Mas and Cargill. This post will work with technical partners to develop and implement landscape interventions. They will build off ZSL’s existing work with the private sector, to include effective monitoring and management of areas of High Conservation Value (HCV) (including SMART training), human wildlife conflict mitigation training, and camera trapping; but will also design and pilot new approaches for environmental best practice in order to meet the project goals. The post holder will also be responsible for the development of a monitoring system, based on SMART, for companies to effectively monitor and report on their environmental impacts, to include the design of KPIs.

This position oversees the UKCCU/NICFI Project in South Sumatra

The UKCCU/NICFI Project works with the Government of South Sumatra, national and district level governments, communities and the private sector to facilitate and support the government, private sector and local communities, to establish and pilot the sustainable landscape management partnership approach in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape of South Sumatra. The proposed impact of this project is to achieve “Inclusive economic growth and community prosperity, biodiversity conservation, forest protection and restoration, and the ending of deforestation, peatland drainage and wildfires that reduces land-based GHG emissions”.  

The Private Sector Manager will be based in Palembang.

Main Responsibilities 

People
The Private Sector Manager will report directly to the Pilot Landscape Team Leader, and indirectly to the Sumsel Project Deputy Director.

S/he will be responsible for hiring and supervising a team to deliver the programme of work.Forest Management Team Leader and Environmental Management Companies 

Responsibilities
The post-holder will ensure that operations in Palembang are in compliance with ZSL policies and the contractual agreement with the donors.

Building Relationships
The job requires continued professional internal and external interaction/ communications, both in person and via phone and email

Mental Demands
The position will require close attention to detail and therefore concentration on the work in hand – precision and accuracy being vital attributes.

Flexibility
The position will be relatively routine in terms of day-to-day tasks during office hours – however sometimes e.g. during field trips or when a workshop is being organized the next day, some flexibility in working hours may be required.
Working Conditions This post is office based in ZSL’s office in Palembang, South Sumatera. However, travel to field sites and other ZSL offices will be required.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum Master degree in a related discipline e.g. forestry, biology, natural resource management, or conservation 
  • Minimum 15years’ successful experience working in a similar position with an international NGO
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, financial and organizational development skills, strong coaching skills and excellent analytical and financial planning skills
  • Strong analytical and interpretative problem solving skills 
  • Self-motivated and resourceful, with the proven ability to multi-task and operate successfully under tight deadlines and time pressures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Previous work (directly or indirectly) with Government of Indonesia Institutionswould also be a strong advantage.
Knowledge
  • Understanding about wildlife particulary in Indonesia is an advantage. 
  • Understanding the private sector and industry enviromentl best practice, particulary for the palm oil and forestry sector. 
  • Knowledge of national and government policies and regulations.
Skills & Abilities
  • Good level of competence in MS Office. 
  • Good level of data reporting and analytics competencies (content knowledge). 
  • Good communications and negotiation skills. 
  • Self-starter, pro-active and uses initiative - can work independently and prioritize own work load; 
  • Preferably a high level of written and spoken English; 
  • Highly motivated. 
  • Willing to work under any circumstances both independently or in a group, such as in remote areas with very limited facilities.
  • Target oriented and able to deal with tightly scheduled and unscheduled tasks.
  • Willing to travel extensively across the project sites in Indonesia.
