Underthe auspices of the Birds Head Seascape (BHS), CI Indonesia has supported West Papua governments and communities to create and effectively manage more than 3.5million hectares of multi-use marine protected areas (MPAs). One aim of these MPAs is to enhance access to, and management of local fisheries resources by coastal communities. A second is to reduce fisheries impacts on non-target species and habitats. Under the supervision of the Kaimana Corridor Manager, the Sustainable Fisheries Coordinator will lead the implementation of local fisheries projects and partnerships in Kabupaten Kaimana. In line with CI’s global fisheries strategy, the position will help CI Indonesia to create new fisheries partnerships and approaches, while ensuring that sustainable livelihoods are developed within BHS partner communities. Responsibilities:
Coordinate BHS-related fisheries partnerships in Kaimana with local stakeholders. Initially
this will focus on the Yayasan Bina Usaha Lingkungan (Environmental Defense Fund) and Masyakat Dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI) partnerships in Kaimana;
Directly support communities to develop fisheries management, including the creation of Kelompok Nelayan (Fisheries Group), Fisheries Improvement Projects (FIPs);
Develop fisheries management measures including harvest control rules and spatial management within the MPA system and regulations;
Work with local government and stakeholders to advance fisheries management policy, with particular attention to WPP implementation and UU23/2014 local government law;
Work with private sector players to develop new partnerships in order improve fisheries supply chain outcomes for local fishers;
Provide occasional support to other BHS sites as requested;
Ability to work well with limited supervision, and coordinate remotely with field programs
Qualifications :
Min. Degree in fisheries science, natural resource management or economics.
Demonstrated strong ability to work directly with fishers and build effective partnerships with communities
Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary fisheries management approaches
Ability to engage effectively with scientists and policy-makers, manage field projects, develop partnerships
Experience in market-based approaches to fisheries conservation, community-based
conservation, traditional ecological knowledge and/or marine protected areas
Experience working in remote locations and at sea, with frequent travel to field
