Job
Summary:
The Sustainable Landscapes Partnership (SLP)
is an innovative public-private partnership in Indonesia that brings
governments, communities, businesses, and non-governmental organizations
together to develop and test new approaches to land use planning and management.
It is aimed at creating sustainable agricultural economic opportunities, while
maintaining natural capital and avoiding deforestation and associated
greenhouse gas emissions.
Currently, SLP is working at three target sites in
Sumatera, namely Mandailing Natal (Madina), Tapanuli Selatan (TapSel), and
Tapanuli Utara (TapUt) districts, and may expand to West Papua. SLP aims
to establish a replicable model of public-private partnerships that foster low
carbon development opportunities, thereby helping to address global climate
change and contribute to economic growth.
SLP is implemented by Conservation International and funded by
the United States Agency for International Development and the Walton
Family Foundation.
SLP has three main objectives:
- Demonstrate low emissions development models that contribute to improved livelihoods and the preservation of natural capital including biodiversity
- Increase private sector engagement and catalyze investment into low emissions development in target landscapes
- Increase awareness and support among key stakeholders for sustainable landscapes
SLP is in
its last year of a five-year program. Several years of focused effort have
yielded important early results and successes as well as a deepening
understanding of SLP programs and strategies. SLP is poised to position itself
at the global, regional and national levels as a driver of change and a best
practice model in forest conservation, low carbon emissions development,
sustainable agriculture, and natural capital preservation.
In order to
articulate its successes and outcomes, identify lessons learned and next steps,
SLP requires a development writer to prepare a comprehensive final report,
covering the life of the program from inception to completion (January 1, 2011
to January 30, 2015).
The consultant’s work will include conducting
extensive interviews in three SLP districts in North Sumatera, Medan, Jakarta
and possibly West Papua, and taking photographs of government, community
beneficiaries, grantees, NGOs and private sector partners, donors, and other
appropriate stakeholders guided by SLP team.
The report
will describe what SLP did (as well as why and how), what was achieved, what
the challenges are, and what are the next steps for government, communities,
private sector, and donors. The final report will also document and synthesize
the impact of the USAID, WFF and CI’s investment in SLP as well as
success/outcome, challenges and next steps at the national, provincial and
district levels.
The reports
will be approximately 12,000 – 15,000 words, consisting of
approximately 30-40 pages of text (including sidebars and photos, but not
including maps and other appendices). The Table of
Contents elements of the SLP final report must include at a minimum (excerpted
from SLP’s Cooperative Agreement section 1c below):
- Executive Summary of the activities implemented, accomplishments and results/impacts achieved measured against the indicators in the Performance Monitoring Plan
- Overall description of program activities (concept, strategy)
- Accomplishments and results/impact against performance indicators (summary of PMP indicator table with target vs actual, detail column with explanation)
- Detailed assessment of progress made towards the objectives and expected results
- Conclusions and Lessons learned
- Summary of Problems/Obstacles encountered during implementation and how the obstacles were overcome/addressed
- Recommendations for Future Programming under each of the program objectives
- Future challenges and opportunities/next steps for replicating similar programs
- Story boxes of SLP success stories
- Detail all deliverables produced by the program (list in an appendix)
- Maps, charts
The
consultant’s work will coordinate and consolidate closely with SLP team,
M&E Specialist and a success story consultant[1]).
Written
work will take place between October 1 2015 and January 8, 2016, and should be
undertaken in Jakarta.
Key Responsibilities:
Working
under the supervision of the COP, the Consultant will:
- Conduct extensive interviews with stakeholders as guided by the SLP team, including SLP field sites in Madina, TapSel, TapUt, Medan, and Jakarta,
- Take at least 30 new photographs or select photographs from SLP’s existing archive and write captions for use in the final report,
- Capture and write up at least 10 story boxes in related to SLP achievements.
- Prepare a first, second and final draft that incorporates feedback from the SLP team
- Edit the structure and grammar of SLP comprehensive report and ensure it is consistent with SLP Style Guide and Branding Guidelines.
DELIVERABLES
- A draft and final outline for the report that incorporates feedback from the SLP team
- An interview schedule and result
- Selection of 30 new or existing photographs and captions for use in the final report
- Selection of at least 10 success stories for use in the final report
- A first, second, (and possibly third), and final draft that incorporates feedback from the SLP team, CI HQ and USAID.
Minimum Qualifications:
- MA degree in journalism or communications;
- More than 15 years’ experience in strategic communications, journalism, development story writing, development photography, and/or program evaluation, including experience working with NGOs, government, donor-funded programs on communications;
- Demonstrated experience in providing strategic communications expertise to international conservation efforts; compiling, writing and editing final evaluation reports for development programs; and taking photographs (and writing captions) in compliance with USAID requirements and in compliance with SLP’s Branding and Marking Guidelines;
- Fluency in English (required) and Indonesian (highly desired).
- The consultant will provide a fluent English/Indonesian translator, who can translate exact meaning, not paraphrases.
- The consultant will coordinate all activities with and report directly to the COP.
- Available during the period of service.
