This is an international volunteering opportunity. We welcome applications from all nationalities and ethnicities. To volunteer with VSO, you'll need both professional experience and qualifications. Exact requirements will depend on your area of expertise. The placement length could be varied from at least six months to two years.

Primary Teacher Trainer (Volunteer)
VSO works in education in 17 countries. Our education volunteers are part of a global effort to make sure every child can access quality primary education. You’ll be working alongside local colleagues, helping them develop their teaching methodologies and practices. That might mean helping teachers across several schools to build their confidence in the classroom. It could mean working with education authorities on curriculum development and school management. You might even work to make sure teachers are better valued, developed and supported.


Role overview

• Teacher Training Colleges, Education Development Centres, ministries of education will host you as a volunteer.
• You'll support them in the development of primary education and advise them on the following: coaching tutors on active and child-centred methods, training pre-service teachers, developing curriculum, ensuring resources for training are operational and accessible, monitoring and evaluating input and output of implemented programmes, advising on teacher motivation.

Skills, qualifications and experience required

• A primary teaching qualification and a minimum of 3 years teaching experience in primary education.
• Experience of teacher training and teacher coaching is not always essential and we will consider applicants without this experience.
• Together with the above, VSO will assess all candidates against the following competencies, which make up VSO's volunteer competency framework.
• Open minded and respectful, resilient and adapt well to new situations.
• Able to facilitate positive change and build sustainable working relationships. But most of all, as this is the vision of VSO, you're competent to seek and share knowledge.

Supporting you
We'll help you prepare before you go on your placement. We'll also support you while you're there and when you return. In terms of financial support, VSO will typically cover;

• Volunteer allowance to cover your basic living expenses whilst overseas
• Return air ticket
• Modest accommodation
• Medical insurance for the entire duration in placement.
• Training costs

Countries where you may be placed
Nepal, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Nigeria (None of these African countries have any incidences of ebola, and are very far from western Africa.)
