ZSL Indonesia Job Vacancy: Wildlife Crime Investigation Unit Coordinator, Jambi

The Zoological Society of London is an international wildlife conservation organization with a focus on science-based and pragmatic solutions. ZSL has been active in Indonesia for about 10 years, with a particular focus on the overlap between industrial development and biodiversity conservation. ZSL’s Indonesia is based in Bogor, West Java, with existing field projects in Jambi and South Sumatera. We are now looking for:

Wildlife Crime Investigation Unit Coordinator

Terms and Condition
Start Date: July 2015
Duration of Contract: One year fixed-term contract
Work Area: JambiHours of Work: Monday to Friday from 09.00 am up to 05.00 pm
Reporting to: Tiger Conservation Project Manager
Key Internal Relationships: Research and Community Coordinator and Tiger Protection Coordinator
Key Purpose of the JobCoordinate the activities of the Wildlife Crime Investigation Unit (WCIU), or in Bahasa Indonesia: Unit Kejahatan Hidupan Liar (UKHL), across the Berbak-Sembilang landscape including close cooperation with law enforcement officials.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate 1 team of the WCIU/UKHL consisting of 3 fulltime field staff from the local communities. 
  • Record and report all expenses in the project’s implementation each month to the Finance Coordinator, with a copy to Tiger Conservation Project manager
Main duties and key responsibilities
  • Establish and coordinate the WCIU/UKHL to tackle wildlife crime in the Berbak-Sembilang Landscape; 
  • Train the field staff and BKSDA Staff in tackling wildlife crime;
  • Establish and manage wildlife crime investigators and the informant network in the Berbak-Sembilang Landscape;
  • Communicate with relevant stakeholders at both regional and national levels;
  • Ensure the achievement of project activities and high performance in accordance with the project work plan;
  • Monthly reporting to the Tiger Conservation Project manager
Building relationshipsEstablish and manage communication and coordination with stakeholders specially law enforcement agencies including the Indonesia Police and Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) investigators.
Mental DemandsThis post will be mentally demanding, often the post-holder will find themselves in unexpected situations and be required to take quick decisions, finding solutions and deciding upon the best strategy to take.

FlexibilityThis post will require time flexibility due to investigation work often happening out of office hours and the fact that the post-holder will often be working undercover.

Working Conditions
  • This post will require extensive external work dealing with wildlife poachers and traders; 
  • This post will require strong collaboration with law enforcement agencies/officials;
  • This position will be office based but considerable travel or field work is likely to be required.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Experience
  • A minimum of a first level degree preferably in Biology or Forestry (S1); 
  • Extensive experience in wildlife conservation or a closely related area;
  • Prior experience in managing and developing a team.
Knowledge
  • An understanding of Indonesian Laws on forestry and wildlife; 
  • An understanding of Indonesian legal procedures and processes on crime investigation activities;
  • Prior in-depth knowledge of the wildlife trade in Indonesia.
Skills & Abilities
  • Has good ability in project planning, implementation, and evaluation; 
  • Able to work under any circumstances, strong prioritization skills, able to deal with both scheduled and unscheduled tasks;
  • Having excellent communication skills; both oral and written in English and Indonesian;
  • Able to work independently and in a group.
Other Requirements
  • Willing to travel extensively across Sumatra and beyond; 
  • Having a valid driving licence for car and motorbike.
