World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia Vacancy: Forests Research Analyst, Indonesian

Overview

The World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia is seeking for a full-time Research Analyst with excellent analytical, writing, as well as communication skills to conduct research and outreach activities under its Indonesia Forests program. This person reports directly to the WRI Indonesia Country Director, and may regularly work with managers at the global office. As one of the first environmental-economic think tanks in the country, WRI Indonesia offers an opportunity to impact data-driven decision making processes in the public, private, as well as civil society sectors. Its flagship projects, Global Forest Watch, Global RestorationInitiative, and Forests andLandscapes in Indonesia, aim to address the challenges of sustainable land-use and climate change.

Global Forest Watch

Global Restoration Initiative
Combining existing principles and techniques of development, conservation, and natural resource management, this initiative integrates site-specific forest restoration activities with desired landscape-level objectives.

Forests and Landscapes in Indonesia
An initiative that works with all stakeholders in Indonesia’s forests to support decisions and management that are profitable and sustainable, ranging from generating environmental and governance data on natural resources, to conducting capacity building to catalyze change on the ground.

Position Overview
This position requires a quick-learning, organized generalist with sharp research and analytical skills who is able to multitask to complete various timely assignments. The research analyst will work with WRI Indonesia’s small but effective team to cover a number of natural resources-related issues, initially focusing on forestry and land use, and may expand to climate change, energy, and cities and transportation. Communication skills will also be essential as part of outreach activities to promote WRI’s data, analyses, and online mapping platforms.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct primary and secondary research on Indonesian forestry, land use, and other natural resource issues according to project publication priorities;
  • Administer outreach activities to promote WRI’s data, analyses, and online mapping platform to relevant stakeholders in the public, private, as well as civil society sectors; 
  • Develop country-specific strategy to leverage WRI’s global work; 
  • Interpret and analyze media developments related to forestry, land use, and other natural resources issues. 
  • Attend, participate in, and document meetings and conferences with key stakeholders; 
  • Establish a country-specific monitoring and evaluation system based on existing needs and capacity, further improve it over time to meet various donors and reporting requirements; 
  • Contribute to grant reporting requirements; compile and process evaluation results, collaborate with other WRI staff to create a report presenting the results to our funder; 
  • Supervise subgrant projects conducted by partners in remote geographies; 
  • Identify and engage with relevant civil society groups; 
  • Coordinate activities with partner organizations; 
  • Liaise effectively with project staff based in Washington D.C.; 
  • Support and promote the institutional development of WRI Indonesia as needed; 
  • Support other activities as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Ideal candidate will have Bachelors or Masters degree in forestry, agriculture, environmental science, public policy, political science, or other relevant fields; 
  • Professional experience of minimum 2-3 years in natural resources-related issues; 
  • Very strong writing and research skills, excellent academic performance, as well as high level of organization and attention to detail; 
  • Familiarity with or interest in Indonesian natural resources issues; 
  • Experience in reviewing and analyzing Indonesian law and government regulations; 
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation is a plus; 
  • Experience communicating with Indonesian government officials and various stakeholder groups is a plus; 
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team, and work under tight deadlines; 
  • High integrity, passion for sustainable development, and good sense of humor preferred; 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written English and Indonesian; 
  • Legally able to work in Indonesia.
Location: Jakarta, Indonesia

Starting date: As soon as possible.
Salary:  Very competitive, negotiable, and commensurate with education, experience and position responsibilities. Between date of hire and May 2015, this position will be an independent contractor. From May 2015, this position will be a staff member of WRI Indonesia.
