ABOUT THE ROLE:
As the Human Resources Manager you will play an essential role in strengthening CIVICUS’ organisational capacity by designing and delivering on the HR strategic priorities during an organizational growth phase.

ABOUT YOU:
To provide the high-level strategic and operational support required for this post you will have exceptional interpersonal/ communication skills and extensive hands-on experience in Human Resources (plus a degree qualification). With a deep knowledge of HR principles and process and proven experience of implementing HR strategy, preferably in a multi-site organization and possibly in an international organization, you can also deliver tactically. Focused on best practice, you will be resourceful, resilient, and have a desire to find solutions where they are not obvious.

On a day to day basis we need you to develop and implement major HR initiatives to support the people agenda both in South Africa and in our international offices; provide high-level technical expertise to ensure effective development and delivery of HR strategies; propose, plan and implement initiatives to drive a high-performance team as well as an inclusive and collaborative culture; provide tactical oversight of multiple HR deliverables (payroll, recruitment, L&D, organizational development, talent management); work with internal stakeholders to increase people management capabilities; act as the HR lead and expert on HR policies and procedures ensuring organizational governance imperatives are met.

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Human Resources Manager reports to the Chief Operating Officer and operates as a true HR Business Partner to the Management Team, enabling the achievement of CIVICUS’ strategic organizational objectives through devising and implementing best practice HR strategic objectives.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Strategic Human Resources management including supporting management inconsistent application of human resource management tools; Develop and implement HR strategies to support the people agenda in CIVICUS, through providing high-level coordination and technical expertise. Propose, plan, and implement initiatives to drive a high-performance team, as well as an inclusive and collaborative culture. Translate organizational business plans into HR strategic and operating plans, and ensuring robust alignment between HR plans and CIVICUS priorities.
  • Drafting and implementation of employment contracts, policies and procedures, agreements; Work with internal stakeholders and process owners to analyze, assess, update or revise and document HR policies/procedures associated with operational and strategic HR processes. Take ownership of all relevant HR documentation including but not limited to employment contracts, workplace agreements, policies, and procedures:
  • Recruitment and selection; Focus on organizational planning, forecast manpower requirements, develop a best practice employer brand and applicant focussed resourcing process that accesses active and passive candidates;
  • Training and development; Create career pathway plans for all staff, identifying relevant training and mentoring opportunities internally and externally as well as creating a leadership development program;
  • Retention and succession planning; Lead Workforce Planning and Talent Management processes to identify and address competency, knowledge, and talent gaps. Areas of activities will include staffing, career pathways, talent development and succession planning programs;
  • Job grading and performance management; Lead the development of a pay and job grading structure on the basis of pay for performance criteria. Align across CIVICUS globally to ensure that compensation and benefits remain competitive and are aligned with the global Reward philosophy; provide consultation to local staff/managers on reward issues;
  • Organizational development; Build a compelling employee value proposition (EVP), working environment and organizational culture, which will attract and retain the best local, regional and global talent;
  • Employee relations; Lead employee relations matters in a manner consistent with CIVICUS values, driving a culture of performance and accountability, while complying with local regulations and appropriately managing risk;
  • Organizational governance and legal/compliance; Comply with and keep abreast of any relevant legislation applicable to the performance of the duties of this position; ensure that organizational liabilities are met in the form of payroll, workers compensation and other taxes are adhered to and ensure that CIVICUS is protected from liability at all times;
  • Managing own unit human resources across CIVICUS offices (currently London, New York, and Geneva) and outsourced service providers; Develop and maintain knowledge of international HR policies, laws, and issues. Understand the differences between domestic and international policies and continually assess the competitiveness of CIVICUS practices against the best-in-class standards;
  • Payroll; Ensure staff and contractors are paid on time and in accordance with contractual entitlements and legal obligations.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS/ COMPETENCIES/ BEHAVIOURS:
  • Degree with a major in Human Resources Management or equivalent.
  • Proven record (8 -10 years) of leading the provision of a range of Human Resources Management services in large or complex (preferably multi-site and possibly international) organizations’.
  • Demonstrated capacity to effectively transfer and communicate ideas, concepts, and information to others, verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated record of adopting a consultative approach in the delivery of Human Resources services to managers and employees, tailoring service delivery to meet organizational needs.
  • Sound understanding of the legislative and industrial framework that applies to Human Resources Management issues in South Africa. (Knowledge of legislative frameworks in other vicinities where CIVICUS has offices would be beneficial).
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a self-motivated, highly organized professional setting clear objectives, driving outcomes and meeting timelines.
  • Demonstrated experience of building and managing teams to deliver on the Human Resources agenda in growing/ changing organizations.
  • Proven commercial acumen, demonstrating previous experience of developing and adapting Human Resources Management Services to meet organizational priorities.
  • Advanced negotiation skills utilizing where necessary influencing skills in a manner that gains agreement or acceptance across both management and employee populations.
  • Computer literate and self-sufficient.
Salary package: R580 000- R650 000 pa.
