JOB FUNCTION:
To support, manage and develop the sustainability team of MDPI in its
mission to work on sustainable fisheries implantation in Indonesia and
the region.
POSITION SUMMARY :
The
primary responsibility for the program management staff (of which
Sustainability Manager (SM) is one) is to implement activities which are
related to fisheries improvement in Indonesia including ongoing, as
well as newly developing projects. Fisheries improvement focuses on
various aspects, namely:
- The sustainability of the fish stocks
- The sustainability of the environment
- The management of the fishery
The
theory behind MDPI is that working in the community on sustainability
efforts is incomplete without a focus on the human factor. Hence
sustainability additionally includes the sustainability of the fishing
communities. For this reason the position also focuses on:
- Community development
- Capacity building
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES :
Each
of the following points explains the topics which will constitute a
portion of the employee’s time. The importance of a given responsibility
may alter throughout time as the programs of MDPI develop, change and
grow. The employee should be aware that these tasks are related both to
maintenance of current sites and development of new field sites within
the MDPI program.
- Team management: to manage the MDPI sustainability team, give guidance, receive input and direction on program development and ensure that all aspects of support needed by field teams to implement their programs is available to them.
- Program management: to collaborate and integrate the sustainability programs with those of the other departments within MDPI, especially Fair Trade, Fisheries Improvement and Traceability.
- Relationship Building: to build strong networks with partner organizations, namely; National, Provincial and district governments, Industry, Industry Associations, other NGOs and foundations, Universities and other ongoing projects. These networks should lay the basis for strong collaboration and a united progress for Indonesian fisheries.
- Program Development: to work with the field teams, the directors and external partners to develop new, innovative and progressive programs related to fisheries sustainability and community development
- Systems Development: Current MDPI protocols and SOPs for field work and enumerator training require development. The SM will ensure that the program systems related to implementation are meeting a high standard and are maintained in an updated format.
- Managing the Implementation of Port sampling/ data collection systems: currently MDPI has a port sampling system which it implements called I-Fish. The SM will ensure the maintenance of this program and will support the improvement of the program where required.
- Data management: the port sampling system yields large amounts of raw data, the SM will ensure that this data is analyzed using various methods, which best suit the data format and the needs to the users and will prioritize its communication to stakeholders
- FIP Support: Supporting and developing programs which are related to FIP implementation on the ground
- Co-Management: To manage the development of Data management Committees as a form of co-management on the provincial level.
- To work, in collaboration with the Fair Trade team, to develop programs related to community development and capacity building for communities within MDPI implementation sites.
- To work in collaboration with the fisheries improvement project team to develop programs which are required and progressive towards reaching MSC certification for various fisheries
- Data reporting.
These 7 main responsibilities are further broken down into detailed tasks to be completed by the employee:
- To build and lead a strong, result oriented team which is working to meet objectives in an innovative and sincere way
- To ensure that the field team is supported adequately to meet its objectives through meeting staffing needs, operational support, systems development and training
- To communicate well with and build linkages and joint programs between the various departments within MDPI
- To support the establishment of relationships with organisations and key individuals as part of the public engagement process
- To act as facilitator for a variety of fisheries sustainability and community development programs (i.e. leading interactions with fishermen/government, developing relationships with fishermen/government, addressing the needs of those communities and ensuring that all within the group are able to meaningfully contribute and share their knowledge and opinion within this interaction)
- To develop relationships with key agencies that may be interested in funding community engagement work To ensure high level of delivery of MDPI activities (related to sustainability and community development in the field)
- To continuously promote and communicate the objectives of MDPI and its programs to all stakeholders in the field and to all of the team members of the implementation (enumerator) level.
- To advice MDPI Program directors on how to develop and design new fisheries innovative projects and manage the development of these
- To continuously improve your knowledge of fisheries in the region
- To ensure a high level of implementation is reached by field teams using I-Fish
- To support the development and strengthening of I-Fish
- To support the development of various methods for data analysis
- To develop methods for communication of data to various stakeholders
- To ensure data reporting to government and various stakeholders is continuous and of high quality
- To develop programs related to data improvement/ participatory co-management, FIP milestone achievement and to ensure their implementation in the field through the field site staff.
- To support the design and executions of training activities on different elements of fisheries sustainability and community development (e.g. sustainability of fisheries topics, fisheries management, FIPs, ETPs etc.)
- (e.g. PNPM Mandiri, MMAF community grant, KKL Universities)
- To work closely with the Sustainability coordinators and Director programs and resaerch to ensure that project implementation at the field sites are delivered in an effective and efficient manner.
- To ensure the sustainability department is submitting regular updates and publicity materials on projects to ensure that where appropriate MDPI activities are publicised in the media.
- To submit regular reporting on activity progress and updates to MDPI senior management.
- To collaborate closely with the managers and coordinator levels of other departments to ensure alignment and collaboration between departments is ongoing
- Other tasks assigned by the Director, Program Director and operations manager
QUALIFICATIONS
1. EducationUniversity master degree in fisheries and marine science, or related 10 years program for fisheries sector.2. Experience
- At least 5 years experiences in rural development, sustainability development, or value chain strengthening project
- Experience in delivering capacity building activity for individuals and institutions (such as providing consultancy, leading discussion, and facilitating training)
- Excellent in advocacy and communications knowledge, including negotiation skills and diplomacy skills
- Good interpersonal skills, including patience, willingness to listen and respect for beneficiaries and all stakeholders in fisheries sector
- Trust worthy, self-motivated and able to take initiative under minimum supervision, able to work independently as well as a part of a team in a cross cultural environment.
- Able to work under pressure and be exposed in a cultural-sensitive environment in Eastern Area of Indonesia
- Understand local language is added value
- Fluent in English (verbal and written).

To ensure that strong teams in the field sites are well informed and
can communicate aspects of the SM job to the stakeholders (using the
field teams to become agents of change) and that these teams are kept
motivated to implement their responsibilities
- To ensure a high standard of work is produced and reported to management by the supervisory level of field workers.
