The
Indonesia Urban Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (IUWASH) is a five years
development project funded by U.S. Agency for International Development
(USAID). IUWASH assists the Government of Indonesia to make a significant
progress in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by expanding access to clean
water and adequate sanitation services. Expanding access among Indonesia’s
urban poor,
currently those people with the most limited access to these services is the
goal of IUWASH. In addition, IUWASH also promotes the goals of the
U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership by improving urban water and
sanitation services thereby strengthening individual health. In reaching its
goal, IUWASH works at the intersection of communities, local government, and
service providers. The commitment of IUWASH is to mobilize demands for water
supply and better sanitation service delivery, as well as improves capacity for
service delivery (especially of government institutions). IUWASH also
strengthens national strategies and enables local government and water
utilities to deliver high quality, efficient water and sanitation services.
The
expected results to be achieved are: Two million people in urban areas gain
access to improved water supply; 250,000 people in urban areas gain access to
improved sanitation facilities; and Water cost paid by the poor in targeted
areas decreases by at least 20%. To achieve the above, technical assistance is
dividing in three main technical components:
- Mobilizing demand for water supply and sanitation service delivery;
- Improving and expanding capacity for water and sanitation service delivery; and
- Strengthening policy and the financial enabling environment for improved water supply and sanitation service delivery.
USAID/IUWASH in partnership with PDAM will
implement a “water replenish” project in Kabupaten Batang, Central Java. The
project objective is to facilitate recharging of spring aquifer (Desa Bismo/
Bismo Spring area and Desa Tambak boyo Gunung/ Watulumbung Spring area in Kab.
Batang) which contributes to the drinking water supply for Kab. Batang. Over
the last years discharge has been deteriorating at a rate of 5 - 10 % per year.
In addition to this, the Bismo spring and Watulumbung spring is a critical contributor
to raw water supply of PDAM Kabupaten Batang. If this decline continues or even
increases as the case may be due to negative effects of Climate Change, PDAM
Kabupaten Batang will lose two of their
most reliable water sources, with immediate impact on the supply of safe water
to many people.
Therefore to overcome the problems it IUWASH
together with PDAM Batang will implement reforestation programs and
infiltration ponds in both areas is through PDAM CSR and Companies CSR
Third parties will only carry out the construction
work construction Infiltration ponds in the two village to implement the
Operational Cooperation (Kerjasama Opreasional/KSO) with community groups that
have been formed in the Bismo village and Tambakboyo Tambakboyo (points 6, 7
& 8).
