ACF International Vacancy: Mental Health and Care Practices Field Worker, based in Kupang

Founded in 1979, ACF International (Action Against Hunger) is an international humanitarian organization that delivers programs in over 40 countries. Recognized worldwide as a leader in the fight against hunger, our mission is to save lives through the prevention, detection, and treatment of malnutrition, especially during and after emergency situations and conflicts.

Currently,  UNICEF and ACF have just started a new project on Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) in Nusa Tenggara Timur. ACF and UNICEF will work in partnership to provide technical assistance to improve the management of acute malnutrition in children aged less than five years in Kupang District in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) Province.

This programme proposes to build the evidence base on how to effectively integrate the CMAM approach into routine health service delivery in Indonesia and ensure it is linked with other essential health and nutrition services to prevent and treat both moderate and severe acute malnutrition and other forms of undernutrition. In addition, it will examine ways to better integrate the provision of WASH and CMAM services.

In order to reach its goal, ACF Indonesia Mission is seeking a qualified candidates for the position of Care Practices Field Worker – CMAM as part on the program team to be based in KUPANG, East NusaTenggara / Nusa Tenggara Timur Province.

Initial Contract duration : 12 months with possibility of extension

Reporting to : Nutrition and Health Program Manager

Starting date : early January 2015

Technical Knowledge and Skills
  • Diploma or Bachelor in Medical sciences (Nutrition, Public Health, Nursing, etc)
  • Experience in implementing care practices activities (Mother Support Group discussion)
  • Have knowledge of nutrition (symptoms, causes, and treatment of malnutrition; nutrition value of food items; infant care practice, etc) 
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a diverse team, and within diverse cultural / religious contexts 
  • Sensitivity to and empathy with the community, especially regarding traditional and cultural beliefs, heath/nutrition practices, health seeking behaviour and gender issues.
General Requirements : 
  • Min. of 1 year experience work in Care Practices,
  • Good communication skills (internal and external) 
  • Good team spirit---Team player 
  • Previous experiences working in humanitarian organizations/context will be beneficial 
  • Understanding of local context (community behaviour) 
  • Training experience, familiarity with different stimulation/awareness methods 
  • Willingness to travel and live in project areas (villages and sub-districts)
Goal : Organize education sessions on care practices, health and nutrition.
Be in charge of assisting the volunteers of nutritional programmes with various approaches

Objectives of the Position:

Objective 1: Assisting the kaders/volunteers of MSG (Mother Support Group) to do their activities
  • Facilitating the implementation of Breastfeeding counselor Training for health workers 
  • Collaborate with Puskesmas to provide training on IYCF to cadres and MSG Motivator (volunteer) 
  • Assist the kaders/volunteers to facilitate the MSG session 
  • Coordinate with midwives in Puskesmas about MSG session 
  • Participate in encouraging the mothers to breastfeed their children whenever appropriate. 
  • Participate in informing and showing the kaders/volunteers and health staff to do the protocols of MSG 
  • Make a list of priorities in terms of information and awareness on questions of hygiene, health and nutrition;
Objective 2 : Assisting the practices of BCC methods in the community settings
  • Participate in training of the kaders/volunteers and health staff to do the protocols of BCC 
  • Assist the kaders/volunteers to facilitate the BCC session 
  • Coordinate with health staff in Puskesmas about BCC session 
  • Implementation on field trial on IEC Materials 
  • Support motivator to do home visit – observation on daily behaviour at household level 
  • Collaborate with Puskesmas in Breastfeeding week
Objective 3: Organize community mobilization at village level
  • Identify potential stakeholders, key persons and organizations that we can involve in the project as partners
  • Identify and assess the community barriers and strength to be involved in our program activities
  • Contact and liaise with the local government and stakeholders about village meetings 
  • Coordinate with different stakeholders regarding the events and activities in the village
Objective 4: Reporting and project documentation
  • Draft a report on daily activities and monthly achievement. 
  • Doing documentation activities in the village level 
  • Monitoring and evaluation of programs in village level 
  • Report every related findings in the field to supervisor and communicate them with other team
