Position : BOOK PUBLISHING CONSULTANT
Based in : Jakarta
The USAID project Prioritazing Reform, Innovation and Opportunities for Reaching Indonesia’s Teachers, Administrators, and Students (PRIORITAS) will focus on capacity building and quality
improvements for teacher training
institutions (TTI) and for non-academic, pre-service teacher
training providers. PRIORITAS will build the capacity of schools and MoEC, MORA national, provincial and district offices
together with pre- and in-service teacher training organizations to coordinate, plan and train.
USAID
PRIORITAS has a special emphasis on developing reading both in early grade
classes and throughout the school including:
- Developing curricula and training materials for teachers in early grade reading
- Training lecturers, teachers and students in the teaching of reading, especially for improved comprehension and student assessment
- Working with schools, communities and local governments to encourage students to read
- Working with publishers to improve the quality and supply of children’s books, for both instructional and recreational reading.
To
support the fourth of these objectives USAID PRIORITAS is planning to work with
USAID, MOEC, partner TTIs and selected publishers to establish a Global
Development Alliance (GDA) partnership in order to develop leveled readers,
based on templates which have already been developed by the Education
Development Center (EDC) a sub-contractor in the implementation of the project.
The
objectives of the GDA program are:
- To provide a set of leveled reading materials for use in the Indonesian context which supports the implementation of early grades reading and literacy teaching and learning.
- To build the capacity of local reading experts from PRIORITAS university partners, and involve other key stakeholders, such as the Ministry of Education and local publishers in the adaptation of the materials.
- To foster an awareness of, and interest in the use of leveled reading materials as a supplement to Ministry of Education textbooks.
USAID PRIORITAS is proposing to engage a consultant
with experience in working with publishers to support the
development and implementation of the proposed GDA.
S/he will
work approximately half time and the scope of work will include the following:
- Contacting the various parties to be involved in the GDA (MOEC, publishers, TTIs) to assess their interest in taking part in the GDA activities;
- Arranging discussions with USAID and USAID PRIORITAS to develop the scope of work for the GDA;
- Supporting the implementation of the GDA (more detailed tasks will be determined after the GDA is agreed).
Qualifications:
- Degree in Related discipline
- 5 - 10 years working with publishers or media
- Strong communication skill and interpersonal skill including diplomacy, willingness to listen as well as respect for beneficiaries request
- Demonstrated excellence writing skill and strong analytical skill
- Fluency in written Bahasa Indonesia with excellent grammar and dictions
- Ability to communicate in English is advantage
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
