The Forest Trust Vacant GIS Specialist, Jakarta & Semarang

TFT is a global non-profit organization that helps companies and communities deliver Responsible Products (see www.tft-forests.org for more details). We act on the ground in forests, farms and factories to help create products that respect the environment and improve people's lives. The position is full-time and based in either TFT’s Jakarta or Semarang office with frequent travel required. To support our projects to deliver Responsible Products, we are urgently seeking a qualified, hardworking and motivated person to fulfill position as follow:

BIODIVERSITY SPECIALIST (BS)
The position is full-time and based in either TFT’s Jakarta or Semarang office with frequent travel required.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
1.      The Biodiversity Specialist will focus on biodiversity issues related to forests, farms, mills and palm oil estate management in Indonesia.

2.      The Biodiversity Specialist will train company staff (both at HQ and field levels) on the implementation of High Conservation Value (HCV). Strong writing skills are required, as the position will involve writing reports and proposals for TFT and for clients (including companies and donors).

3.      The Biodiversity Specialist will also be expected to support the management of stakeholder relations between TFT and Indonesian non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

4.      Prepare strategic action plans with all stakeholder to meet the deliverable of the project.

5.      Prepare blue prints for each project and combine them with available resources for optimum output.

6.      Prepare project frameworks according to TFT Indonesia action plans and goals.

7.      Prepare and conduct trainings for clients and within TFT to reach international standards.

8.     
Assess biodiversity systems for clients and support implementation for required improvements.

9.      Conduct HCV system studies on project sites and provide mentoring to ensure a system has been developed and implemented.

10.  Prepare reports for internal and external audiences.

Qualifications:
  • Fluent in English and Bahasa Indonesia
  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in environment, forestry or field related 
  • Minimum 7 years work experience handling biodiversity, particularly in forests, farms, mills and palm oil estate management
  • Deep understanding of conservation planning and knowledge of HCV
  • Demonstrate strong statistical analysis and ability to use GIS system
  • Good knowledge of handling certification of forests, farms, mills and palm oil estate management 
  • Strong knowledge in natural resource laws and regulations. 
RS-GIS SPECIALIST (Remote Sensing/GIS)

Description

The main responsibility of the RS-GIS Specialist is to provide RS-GIS technical assistance to projects, focusing on biodiversity mapping and supporting the development of an interactive map information system. He/she will create, update and maintain the GIS database for the project and produce biodiversity, socio-economic, political, bio-physical, land cover/land use or other as required. The position is full time and based in TFT’s Jakarta office with frequent travel required.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
  • Conduct research, field work (on-site), and gather GIS and bio-physical, social, economic, political and other data relevant to the project.
  • Acquire high-resolution satellite images, aerial photos, topo and bathymetric maps of project sites.
  • Capture data in different formats using global positioning system equipment, digitizer and other means whilst ensuring proper handling, maintenance, use and storage of GIS/GPS equipment and peripherals.
  • Perform GIS manipulations and analysis including overlays and coverage conversions, data format conversions, digital ortho-photography, GPS collection/post-processing/projection, and data reconciliation.
  • Perform RS manipulations, such as geo-referencing, calibration, image processing and analysis, and feature extraction; as well as produce land cover/land use maps of the project from satellite images.
  • Generate and update GIS metadata, allowing estimations to be made on completeness, history, ownership, and reliability of information derived from the project.
  • Design, produce, and print maps and other graphic products using GIS and other computer software programs.
  • Assist in the preparation of presentation materials, reports, and special events using GIS components.
  • Establish and maintain professional cooperation, linkages and partnerships with government and other institutions whose intentions and programs of work are related with the above.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, geodetic engineering, natural resources, computer science or related discipline.
  • At least two years of professional experience in conducting GIS project(s) involving data management, map production, and spatial analysis. An equivalent combination of education and experience is also acceptable. Experience with conservation projects is desired.
  • Applicants must have strong skills in GIS & Remote Sensing Software (ArcGIS/ENVI/Erdas etc).
  • Applicants must have knowledge and experience designing information management systems.
  • Excellent written, oral and graphic communication skills.
