Organization Description
Build Change is an international non-profit social enterprise that designs
earthquake-resistant houses in developing countries and trains builders,
homeowners, engineers and government officials to build them. Build
Change’s designs are affordable, culturally appropriate, and use
materials and techniques that will continue to be used after our
intervention is finished. Build Change works with the public and
private sector to leave in place long-term change in construction
practice, by assisting governments to develop building codes and small
businesses to produce and market better building materials. Build
Change has ongoing operations in Indonesia and Haiti and is expanding to
Latin America. So far, Build Change has trained more than 15,000
people in Indonesia, China, Haiti, and Guatemala, who have in turn built
nearly 20,000 earthquake-resistant houses, impacting more than 80,000
people.
Build Change is a US-based 501(c)3 non-profit social enterprise in
operation since 2004. Build Change has won grants from Echoing Green,
Draper Richards Foundation, Mulago Foundation and Ashoka-Lemelson and
was named a 2008 Laureate in the Equality Category for Technology
Benefiting Humanity by the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation Tech
Awards. Build Change’s founder won the 2011 Lemelson-MIT Award for
Sustainability and was named a US Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the
Schwab Foundation. Build Change’s work has been featured on abcNEWS

Job Description
Build Change is seeking an exceptional, driven and experienced
candidate with proven management, communication and marketing skills and
continued desire to grow and learn. Curiosity, optimism, tenacity and a
willingness to find and implement sustainable solutions are key
attributes. Hands-on construction experience and ability to demonstrate
bricklaying, rebar bending, concrete mixing, carpentry is helpful but
not required. A structural/earthquake engineering degree is helpful but
not necessary if the candidate understands and can articulate
fundamental concepts of earthquake-resistant design and construction of
confined masonry and timber low-rise buildings.
Build Change has been operating in Indonesia since 2005, in Aceh
after the Indian Ocean tsunami, and in West Sumatra in response to the
2007 and 2009 earthquakes. Recently, Build Change expanded to Bengkulu
and West Java provinces. Build Change is expanding its program to
provide hands-on, technical assistance and training directly to builders
and homeowners who are rebuilding or repairing earthquake-damaged homes
with a cash grant from the Indonesian government and support other
agencies and government to do the same. In addition to managing the
day-to-day execution of Build Change’s programs, the position will focus
on improving construction quality through incentives, coordinating and
overseeing technical high school student training programs, and
mass-marketing good construction practices through private sector
businesses and mass media, and working with brick manufacturers to
produce and sell better bricks.
Key Responsibilities
- Schedule, oversee, and report on training programs for staff of partner agencies, builders, technical high school students, and government officials
- Lead Build Change’s Indonesia expansion
- Lead, mentor and expand Build Change’s team Indonesian engineers and construction professionals to work with each homeowner to build an earthquake-resistant house
- Ensure design and construction standards are met
- Oversee and improve data management and monitoring and evaluation activities, including impact tracking and preparing weekly, monthly, and task-specific reports
- Drive Build Change’s mass marketing efforts through private sector businesses and mass media
- Lead Build Change’s technical assistance and marketing program for better bricks
- Identify and partner with financial institutions to provide access to capital for housing reconstruction
- Maintain and expand relationships with local and national governments, partner agencies, and academic institutions
- Develop partnerships and write proposals.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years professional experience in management position with demonstrated experience managing a team of technical staff and delivering outcomes on time
- Work experience in an elite management setting, or some kind of successful entrepreneurial experience such as starting a field program in a developing country, leading a large event, or starting a business
- Project management skillset that includes ownership over milestones, workplans, reporting, using computer tools such as Excel and Powerpoint • Top-performing educational background in management consulting, social enterprise, earthquake engineering, architecture, construction management, preferably from a leading school
- Hands-on construction experience in masonry, reinforced concrete, and carpentry is helpful but not required
- Professional Engineering license (or equivalent) in civil (structural) engineering is helpful but not required
- International development experience, preferably in Asia, and willingness to live and work in a rural, post-disaster construction environment in Sumatra, Indonesia
- No ego, drama, or pessimism; the successful candidate will be flexible, humble, patient, and have a good sense of humor.
- Fluent English and excellent, professional communications skills with working knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia a plus.
