Vacancy: Senior Advisor for Conservation Science, The Nature Conservancy - Jakarta

SENIOR ADVISOR FOR CONSERVATION SCIENCE (Part-time)


The Senior Advisor for Conservation Science provides conservation science leadership for TNC Indonesia Program, to ensure that the conservation projects, priorities, and policies planned and implemented across the region have robust scientific foundation and achieve the greatest possible conservation outcomes. S/he is a trained scientist, whose responsibility is to provide staff members with current scientific information and innovative science-based approaches required to address key conservation challenges related to sustaining biodiversity and improving ecosystem health in natural and human-dominated landscapes.

S/he supports the conservation program staff in activities including identification of priorities, multi-objective planning, monitoring-protocol development, coordination of field research collaborative, communication of our work to partners, funders, and community members, and general science guidance. S/he is responsible for developing and managing a network of research and government colleagues to ensure that priority conservation science needs are met across the region.

S/he is responsible for fostering the development of conservation science tools, biodiversity data and field services, technical support and training and development of best practices to Conservancy staff and partners. S/he develops and provides standardized approaches and methodologies, information, analyses, maps and expertise to help focus Conservancy and partner conservation efforts on the strategies that will deliver priority conservation outcomes at the greatest scale. S/he liaises with the terrestrial and marine program staffs working on implementing conservation strategies and helps monitor and adaptively improve those efforts; s/he conducts monthly meetings with these staff and prepares a monthly report, and also writes a monthly scientific article which may include emerging lessons. S/he plays a role in educating staff and volunteer leaders within Indonesia and elsewhere on conservation priorities and cutting-edge conservation strategies. S/he is an effective communicator and helps bring visibility to conservation issues and establish the Conservancy as a recognized thought-leader in conservation. S/he serves as a mentor to staff scientists, to foster their effectiveness as scientists and amplify the impact of their scientific efforts and products. S/he is responsible for working with Conservancy staff to communicate and publish findings of conservation research and practice, in scientific, popular, and other channels. The Senior Advisor for Conservation Science reports to the Indonesia Program Country Director.

Basic Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in science-related field and 12-15 years' experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Record of peer -reviewed publications relating to biodiversity, conservation, ecosystem services, or related topics
  • Experience conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives
  • Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners
  • Experience establishing relationships with and collaborating with outside partners, government agencies, community groups, media, landowners or the academic community
  • Experience working with methods and standards of biodiversity information systems, priority setting, and decision support
  • Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals
Requirements:
  • PhD degree in science-related field and 12-15 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and visionary qualities and able to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans at the local or national level
  • Experience developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes
  • Effective at motivating team members, setting goals, and leading efforts
  • Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs; politically savvy
  • Effective at managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Proven interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills
  • Successful experience in fundraising
  • Peer-reviewed publication record
